AUDI AI:TRAIL quattro

The four-seater Audi AI:TRAIL quattro launched at the 2019 IAA is the fourth entrant in the series of Audi AI concept cars.

The “Trail” part of the name evokes the idea of exploring nature. That is why there are no big screens on board for streaming TV series or videoconferencing; instead, broad glass surfaces provide a clear view of the surroundings, extending all the way to ground level providing unrivaled all-round visibility.

Clear layering logic with a rough layer on the bottom, a protective brace, a comfort level, and a concentration of driving controls. All coming together to form a cell perfect for off-roading adventures.

Reducing parts complexity by creating a simplified holistic environment, combining components and and making sure there is strong visual priority.
Visibility, visibility, visibility. We strove to create a helicopter feeling for the driver and passenger, making sure that all the glass areas are fully utilized. A singular gesture points up and towards the driver, celebrating driver orientation and indicative of the pure focus of this interior. Passenger side is pushed as far down as possible while still providing storage opportunities.

Each of our AI concept cars satisfies a singular use case. And therefore each interior calls for a very different interpretation of a dashboard.
Interior designers create environments. A big part of the design process focuses our efforts on making sure all elements are cohesive with one another, from the visual hierarchy, to the language between outside and inside elements.

Functional spaces are integral to this interior. Outdoor items fit on the roof, large items in the trunk, dirty items in a separate rear drawer, and smaller objects accessible in the frunk, from the inside, and the outside, of course.
The essentials. Reduction of interior components means better focus. All the driving controls are around the driver with minimized digital distractions. Less screens, more nature.

With the headlights, digital screens and cameras in one unit, we have a radical interpretation of inside outside, represented in a singular sculptural gesture.

Night view. Incredible glass to body ratio allows for all the Nordic light to seep in with a technical roof structure reminding you that you are protected.

Opening up of the passenger space creates even more exaggeration of driver orientation, emphasized through the matching angles of dashboard movement and digital screens displays.

Reduced for off- roading. The dashboard is squarely set into the tub of the interior with substantial volume to support vehicle interactions and accommodate a storage space for passengers.

Inside outside is especially apparent in the gesture running from the headlights, to side displays and out to the cameras.

Driver focused. Off-roading requires constant attention and access. Despite level 3/4 autonomous capabilities, the steering wheel is always present for emergency takeovers.

The 2 screens play on the theme of duality. 2 side wing mirrors, 2+2 seats, 2 torches etc, they come together to form a centerline for the driver.

In line with designing for inside outside, a whole family of products have been developed to extend the Audi experience when the occupants exit the car.
These objects magnetically attach to magnetic points within the interior, making the user experience as seamless as possible.

An extra Easter egg- the coordinates under 'AUDI DESIGN' leads you to Ingolstadt.
